During one of theses incidents, Sumire returned from work to find her father beating Homare and demanding that she find work as a prostitute. In the face of their father's abuse, Sumire would intervene to protect Homare. Homare likewise tried to find word, first as a papergirl and then delivering milk, but was fired from each job, contributing to her lack of self-confidence.
Sumire would pick up textbooks in an attempt to continue teaching Homare, and took on work as a papergirl in order to save money for them both, although this would be confiscated by her father and gambled away. When she and Sumire were still young, their father removed them from primary school and prevented them for pursuing an education.
